By consistently ignoring without giving in even if the child presses on. Also by minimizing the causes e.g. by letting the child rest when he/she is tired, talking to the child when you are shopping, dealing with the child’s fears e.g. separation fears, teaching the child social skills, setting routines and limits, giving the child attention when she or he is calm.

Is there something that can be done to avoid these tantrums?

Identify the cause-then deal with it. Deal with the tantrums when they occur and the child will not learn to use a tantrum to get what they want.

Temper tantrums and defiant, argumentative, hostile, deliberately annoying behavior -common among 4-5 year olds typically are outgrown by 8 years. If it persists until age 8, children may be diagnosed to have Oppositional Deviant Disorder (ODD)
Children with ODD-Constantly fight, argue, lose their temper, snatch things, blame others, are angry and resentful and generally test the limits of adults’ patience.
Some children with ODD move on to conduct disorder (CD) (repetitive, persistent pattern of aggression, antisocial acts, such as truancy, setting fires, habitual lying, fighting, vandalism, rape or prostitution and use of gums.
Many children with conduct disorder also have ADHD.
Some children with conduct disorder progress to antisocial adults.
