Event Details

Youth with mental health conditions are often subject to stigma and discrimination, largely due to an overall lack of awareness and understanding of mental health conditions. The stigma surrounding mental health issues can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled.’ Efforts are needed to overcome this stigma and discrimination to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free of isolation and unnecessary shame, and that they openly seek the services and support they need.
Acknowledging the theme of this year’s International Youth Day on 12 August and following the UN #MentalHealthMatters campaign, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Focal Point on Youth (DESA), and the Office of the Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth (OSGEY) seek to bring awareness to the issue of youth with mental health conditions, specifically aiming to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and the treatment of mental health conditions. This event will raise awareness of the #MentalHealthMatters campaign, as well as highlight the experiences of brave young individuals who have chosen to speak out about these issues.
The full event will be webcast live at http://webtv.un.org

IMPORTANT: Please note that this is a free event. However, the UN cannot sponsor the transportation or other costs related to participation at the event. All costs associated with attending must be borne by the individual.
